The ProLinx IEC 60870-5-104 Server to IEC 60870-5-101 Master Gateway creates a powerful connection between IEC 104 server devices on an Ethernet network and IEC 60870-5-101Master devices on a serial network. This standalone DIN-rail mounted protocol gateway provides one Ethernet port and one configurable IEC 101 Master serial port.

The ProLinx 104S gateway accepts and responds to commands from a network-connected Client (Master) and can also autonomously generate unsolicited messages for cyclic or event-driven data transmission. Firmware versions 3.00 and later support a wider range of IEC 60870-5-104 Edition 2 data types and Causes of Transmission than previously offered.

The ProLinx 101M driver can be configured to act as a IEC 60870-5-101 Master (controlling unit) communicating with IEC 60870-5-101 slaves (controlled units) on a serial communication network. The 101M driver supports polling of up to 16 slave devices, up to five sectors per slave, using up to 5100 total polling commands.

Specifications

Internal Database

The ProLinx module contains an internal database that consists of areas for application data, status information, and configuration information.

The internal database is shared between all ports on the module and is used as a conduit to pass information from a device on one network to one or more devices on another network.

Application Data Area

The data area is used to store and retrieve data by the protocol drivers and for data exchange between protocols. The database is used as a source for write commands to remote devices and holds data collected from the remote devices. Commands defined in the configuration file (stored in the configuration data area) control how the data is to be handled in the database.

Status Data Area

This area is used to store error codes, counters, and port status information for each port.

Configuration Data Area

This area contains module configuration information such as port configuration, network information, and command configuration. This configuration file is downloaded to, or uploaded from, this area.

The 104S module accepts commands from an attached master unit on the network and generates unsolicited messages.


Protocol Specifications

Operating in the Server mode, the protocol driver accepts commands from one or more clients to read/write data stored in the module's internal registers.

The 104S module acts as an input/output module between the IEC 60870-5-104 Ethernet network and many of the other serial and network protocols, as well as several proprietary interfaces.

General specifications include:

  • User-definable module memory usage
  • Protocol implementation conforms to the IEC 60870-5-104 specification with fully configurable parameters
  • SNTP (Simple Network Time Protocol) timestamping for detailed logging of data transactions

The 104S module accepts commands from an attached master unit on the network and generates unsolicited messages. These last sets of messages are either spontaneous or cyclic. Data transferred to the host is derived from the module's internal database. The remote master device can control data in the database and hence the devices connected using the other protocol in the module using standard control messages supported in the protocol. The remote master device uses the fully-configured databases in the module to control outputs and monitor inputs.
