Applying Wireless to EtherNet/IP Systems
Ethernet for industrial communications is growing rapidly in factory automation, process control and SCADA systems. The ODVA EtherNet/IP network standard is gaining popularity as a preferred industrial protocol. Plant engineers are recognizing the significant advantages that Ethernet-enabled devices provide such as ease of connectivity, high performance and cost savings. While EtherNet/IP has many advantages, cable installation is often expensive, and communications to remote sites or moving platforms may not be reliable or cost-effective.
Wireless Ethernet technologies have emerged that can now reliably reduce network costs while improving plant production. However, applying these technologies is not a simple matter as industrial Ethernet systems vary greatly in terms of bandwidth requirements, response times and data transmission characteristics. This paper will explore applying wireless technologies to EtherNet/IP based networks for industrial automation systems.

Message Manager Initial Set-up Video
This introductory video takes a detailed look at the new Message Manager module for the ControlLogix® platform. The module is an easy to use PLC/PAC data transfer engine that supports Rockwell Automation® networks available in the 1756 platform as well as Siemens Industrial Ethernet and other PLCs/PACs and devices that use Modbus TCP/IP. The tutorial will demonstrate a ControlLogix processor communicating via EtherNet/IP to an SLC processor, which is communicating to a CompactLogix processor, and to a PLC-5 processor by way of a remote ControlLogix rack. This entire application example will all be done without a single message instruction.

Modbus Communication Modules for Extreme Environments
To support the Rockwell Automation Logix-XT platform for extreme environments, ProSoft Technology has developed communication modules for Modbus Master/Slave (MVI56E-MCMXT) and Modbus TCP/IP (MVI56E-MNETXT) networks. The XT communication modules emulate an input/output module on the ControlLogix-XT™ backplane, making Modbus data appear as I/O data to the controller. These modules conform to the EN60079-0 and EN60079-15 standards for caustic and extreme environment applications, allowing them to operate in extreme temperature ranges from -25° C to 70° C.
