Modbus Plus Communications Module

3300-MBP

Important! Please Read!

Product Discontinuation Notice

3300-MBP will be discontinued effective 12/19/2006. This product is being replaced with ProLinx MBP, which is available now. Please review the Product End of Life Notification for important information on ordering, replacement and support for 3300-MBP.

The 3300-MBP (Modbus Plus Communication Module) product family allows Rockwell Automation 1771 compatible processors to easily interface with other Modbus Plus protocol compatible devices.

Features and Benefits

Compatible devices include not only Modicon PLCs (which all support the Modbus Plus protocol) but also a wide assortment of end devices licensed through the ModConnect Program. The 3100 MBP module acts as an input/output module between the Modbus Plus network and the Rockwell Automation backplane. The data transfer from the PLC processor is asynchronous from the actions on the ModPlus Plus network. A 4000-word register space in the module exchanges data between the processor and the ModPlus network.

These modules allow Rockwell Automation platforms to connect directly on Modbus Plus networks as a peer. In addition, the modules act as a slaves to processors that must read/write data from the module's memory.

Crossing all industrial boundaries, potential applications include the connection of Rockwell Automation processors to Modicon processors, and the connection of Modbus Plus speaking devices such as drives, relays, and power monitor hardware to the Rockwell Automation backplanes.

Applications

Applications using the Modbus Communication Module can be found in many industrial sectors and in the

Functional Specifications

Module can support two hardware configurations, single port and redundant port (two Modbus Plus ports in parallel for redundant Modbus Plus configurations)

  • Support for the storage and transfer of up to 4000 registers to/from the PLC /SLC data tables
  • Module memory usage is completely user definable
  • Supports five(5) levels of Modbus Plus network routing
  • Configurable parameters
  • Node Addr: 1 to 64
  • Global Out Size: 0 to 32
  • Global In Size: 0 to 32
  • Module Data Size: 1 to 4000
  • Master Command Cnt: 0 to 100
  • Data Output Paths Cnt: 1 to 8
  • Error Table Pointer: 0 to 4000

The MBP module actively exchanges Global In and Out Data with the Modbus Plus network. Priority is given to these data types to provide a high speed mechanism for the transfer of control data.

  • Global Out Data
    • The module is user configurable to support from 0 to 32 words of Global Out Data.
  • Global In data exists at two levels in the module
    • First, the module is User configurable to support up to 32 words of Global In Data from up to 63 slaves on the network. This data can be mapped anywhere in the module, allowing the user to closely control the data table usage in the module.
    • The second level of support is the high speed transfer of up to 32 words of data across the backplane. The User can configure this 32 word block of data to map any of the 4000 words of module data across the backplane
  • Slave Mode Specifications
    • The MBP module accepts commands from other Modbus Plus devices. These commands are typically issued by Modicon PLCs in the form of MSTR commands.
  • Supported Modbus Plus Functions
    • MSTR 1 Write Multiple Registers (Function Code 16)
    • MSTR 2 Read Multiple Registers (Function Code 3)
    • Up to 100 words per command
    • Supports eight (8) Data Input Paths
    • Master Mode Specifications
    • The MBP module will actively issue Modbus Plus commands to other nodes on the Modbus Plus network.
  • Supported Modbus Plus Functions
    • Type 1 Write Multiple Registers (Function Code 16)
    • Type 2 Read Multiple Registers (Function Code 3)
  • Up to 100 words per commandSupports up to eight (8) Data Output Paths (These paths are auto selected by module on an as available basis)Supports up to 100 Master Command List entries, each individually configurable with the following parameters
    • Enable
    • Type (Read or Write)
    • Routing Address [5 entries
    • Number of words to transfer (1 to 100)
    • Data Registers in MBP module
    • Polling Time
    • Command Control Mode (future)
  • Allows individual command execution control to be done in ladder logic enabling a list of commands to be executed based on events in the PLC/SLC
  • Individual command 'Done' and 'Error' bits available (future)Individual Command Error Status codes returned to the ladder processor
