DH-485 to Modbus Master/Slave Communication Module

5102-DH485-MCM3

Product Description

The ProLinx family DH-485 to Modbus Master/Slave communications module (5102-DH485-MCM3) creates a powerful connection between devices on a Modbus network and a DH-485 master or slave device. The module is a stand-alone DIN rail-mounted protocol gateway that provides one DH-485 Master or Slave configurable serial port and three Modbus Master or Slave configurable serial ports.

The ProLinx DH485 protocol driver supports the Master and the Slave modes of the protocol, providing powerful data transfer capability with Rockwell Automation PLCs and HMIs. User configurable data mapping make the interface an easy to use and powerful data transfer tool.

The Modbus (MCM) protocol driver supports Master and Slave implementations of the protocol. All Modbus serial ports are individually configurable, providing a very powerful and flexible host or device interface solution.

Product Applications

The DH485-MCM modules are the ideal solution for the many applications where Modbus connectivity can be used to integrate a DH-485 device into a system. The DH-485 gateway is a powerful module designed with both Master and Slave support, enabling easy connection to Rockwell Automation PLCs (CLX, SLC, PLC, CPLX, and similar devices). In combination with the Modbus device support, the module provides a very powerful interface to the many Modbus devices which are in use in the industrial marketplace today. Applications for the module are found in most industries, especially the Manufacturing, Oil and Gas, Electrical Power and Food Processing.

Functional Specifications

Internal Database

The ProLinx module contains an internal database that consists of areas for application data, status information, and configuration information.

The internal database is shared between all ports on the module and is used as a conduit to pass information from a device on one network to one or more devices on another network.

Application Data Area

The data area is used to store and retrieve data by the protocol drivers and for data exchange between protocols. The database is used as a source for write commands to remote devices and holds data collected from the remote devices. Commands defined in the configuration file (stored in the configuration data area) control how the data is to be handled in the database.

Status Data Area

This area is used to store error codes, counters, and port status information for each port.

Configuration Data Area

This area contains module configuration information such as port configuration, network information, and command configuration. This configuration file is downloaded to, or uploaded from, this area.

DH485 Master/Slave Serial Port Specifications

The DH485 protocol in its native form is a peer to peer token passing network. The ProLinx DH485 driver accesses the network functioning either as a Master or as a Slave.

In the Master mode, the ProLinx DH485 driver will actively gather data from other devices on the network, controlling the read/write data transfer between the gateway and other DH485 devices, such as SLC processors. When configured in this mode, data transfer can be initiated and executed with the other devices without any ladder logic being required in the Rockwell Automation slave hardware.

DH485 Slave Mode

In the Slave mode, the module accepts commands from one or more Masters to read/write data stored in the module's internal data memory. In this mode, the ProLinx unit is answering DH485 commands and has the appearance of an SLC processor to the network.

DH485 Master Mode

In the Master mode, the ProLinx DH485 driver will actively gather data from other devices on the network, controlling the read/write data transfer between the gateway and other DH485 devices, such as SLC processors. When configured in this mode, data transfer can be initiated and executed with the other devices without any ladder logic being required in the Rockwell Automation slave hardware.

These commands are user-configured in the module via the master command list received from the configuration file. Command status is available in the status data block for each individual command in the command list status data area. The location of this status block in a module's internal database is user-defined.
